Kidney Disease

Tuesday, 23 August, 2022

The pair of kidneys on either side of the spine plays a crucial role in keeping our body functioning. They filter the blood and remove any toxins from the blood. These toxins are transported to the bladder, where they are eliminated from the body through urination.

However, when the kidneys don’t perform their functions normally, it results in kidney failure or kidney disease. When these organs lose their ability to filter waste from the blood, the condition is called kidney failure.

Kidney disease affects the body’s ability to clean the blood, filter extra water from the blood, and control your blood pressure. It can also affect the production of red blood cells and vitamin D metabolization.

Damaged or diseased kidneys cause swelling in the ankles, apart from shortness of breath, nausea, poor sleep, and weakness. If left untreated, this condition can worsen, and the organs will stop functioning. This can be life-threatening.

Causes of Kidney Failure

The chief causes of kidney failure are:

  • High Blood Pressure When blood travels all over the body with increased pressure, the condition is called hypertension, or high blood pressure. If left untreated, hypertension levels can damage the tissue of the kidneys.
  • Diabetes Your blood sugar levels can be beyond control if your diabetes remains unmanaged. High blood sugar levels can severely damage the kidneys and other organs.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease In this hereditary condition, cysts can be seen in the kidneys.
  • Glomerular Diseases These diseases affect the ability of the kidneys to filter waste efficiently.
  • Lupus Along with other autoimmune diseases, lupus affects several body systems.

Besides the above causes of kidney failure, the organs can also be damaged due to diseases, physical injury, or various disorders.

Symptoms of Kidney Failure

In the early stages of this disease, people do not experience any symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Several trips to the bathroom to urinate
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Swollen ankles or hands
  • Itchy skin
  • Poor appetite

Diagnosing Kidney Failure

Your doctor will ask you to undergo several tests. These include a urinalysis, urine volume measurement, blood samples, and kidney tissue samples.

Treatment for Kidney Failure

Several treatment options are available for kidney failure. The type of treatment you need will depend on the cause of your kidney failure. Kidney failure treatment includes dialysis, kidney transplant, reducing intake of alcohol, salt, potassium, and proteins.
